Breaking News – FDA warns the popular diabetes drug Actos may raise the risk for bladder cancer. For more information, please visit our Actos bladder cancer page.

Avandia is linked to tens of thousands of heart attacks, according to a 334-page Senate Finance Committee report. In addition, the committee report concluded that drug maker GlaxoSmithKline was aware of the adverse Avandia side effects, but kept the information from reaching the public.

The report also accused the FDA of being "too cozy" with major pharmaceutical companies at the cost of patient safety. In fact, more than 83,000 patients suffered heart failure due to Avandia by 2007, the report said.

As a result, GlaxoSmithKline is currently facing more than $6 billion in personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits. The drug manufacturer is also facing a federal lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The first trials in the Avandia litigation are expected to being in the summer of 2010.

Why You Should Consider Seeking an Avandia Lawyer

GlaxoSmithKline and all other pharmaceutical companies have a duty to inform consumers of potential serious and/or life-threatening side effects associated with their products. In addition, the FDA relies on this crucial information to determine whether a drug should be approved for patient use. Sadly, drug manufacturers fail to adhere to these standards on a regular basis, which has led to countless personal injuries and wrongful deaths. While no Avandia FDA recall has been issued yet, numerous studies are currently being conducted to reach a conclusion regarding the effectiveness of this type 2 diabetes treatment.

When a drug maker knowingly withholds important safety information for the sake of making a profit, they can be held liable for any harm caused. Although some serious medical conditions may be traced to other factors, these injuries and/or deaths often occur due to manufacturers' negligence, which is often determined based on the following:

  • Failure to properly test each drug before seeking FDA approval
  • Failure to issue effective drug labels that warn of drug side effects and/or health risks
  • Failure to discourage misuse
  • Failure to initiate recall, if necessary

If you believe that you or a loved one has been harmed by Avandia use, it is essential that you speak to a qualified Avandia lawyer. Avandia heart attack victims who have suffered serious personal injury as a result of Avandia may be eligible to receive compensation for their medical expenses, lost income, legal fees and pain and suffering.
