Avandia is an oral medication manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline for the treatment of type II diabetes. Although still available as a prescription medicine, Avandia is currently under FDA review following several clinical trials indicating that the drug may lead to increased risk of serious side effects, including heart failure and stroke. In fact, the FDA has admitted that the agency received information from GlaxoSmithKline as early as 2005 indicating that side effects of Avandia treatment may lead to possible life-threatening complications but decided against issuing an alert due to contradictory scientific data, which still needs to be sorted out. To date there has not been an official Avandia FDA recall.
