Avandia Side Effects – Low/High Blood Sugar – Hyperglycemia
In 2008, a government-run diabetes trial involving 10,000 patients was halted 18 months early following a safety analysis revealing that patients on Avandia faced an increased risk of death due to excessively low blood sugar levels.
High or low blood sugar (known as hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, respectively) is associated with a number of medical conditions, including diabetes. Avandia treatment may worsen or lead to unbalanced blood sugar levels in some patients.
High blood sugar is characterized by an excessive amount of glucose that circulates in the blood plasma. The most common symptoms of high blood sugar include:
- Increased hunger
- Increased thirst
- Increased urination
- Blurred vision
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea or vomiting
Low blood sugar is caused by an extremely low amount of glucose. The most common symptoms of low blood sugar include:
- Sweating
- Shakiness
- Extreme hunger
- Dizziness
- Cold sweats
- Blurry vision
- Changes in behavior (irritability)
- Loss of coordination
- Difficulty speaking
- Confusion
- Seizures
Long-term complications as a result of uncontrolled high/low blood sugar levels include heart and kidney disease, blindness, stroke, blood flow problems, nerve damage and amputations. Type 2 diabetes patients using Avandia may be at risk of developing hypoglycemia.
