Since Avandia's FDA-approval in 1999, this drug has been associated with several minor Avandia side effects, including:

Swelling/water weight gain (edema) is caused by fluid retention. Clinical studies have proven that nearly 5 percent of patients taking Avandia are prone to edema. Excessive weight gain as a result of Avandia may be a serious problem for individuals with certain conditions, including pre-existing heart problems.

Anemia, or low red blood cell count, occurs in about 2 percent of type 2 diabetes patients taking Avandia. Although most Avandia patients experience low to moderate anemia and can be treated successfully, severe anemia may lead to oxygen deficiency in vital organs, including the heart. The most severe side effect of anemia is heart failure.

Upper respiratory infections affect the sinuses, nasal passages, pharynx and larynx. The common symptoms generally include nasal congestion, runny nose, impaired breathing, sneezing, sore throat, painful swallowing, coughing and fever. Upper respiratory infections may lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, meningitis and rheumatic fever. Prompt medical treatment is necessary.

Broken bones in women are another side effect of Avandia treatment. In fact, research shows that Avandia may double or triple the risk of fractures, especially after long-term use. Recent animal studies have shown that Avandia induces bone loss in women because it interferes with the body's ability to replenish bone cells, often leading to upper arm and hand fractures. In 2009, GlaxoSmithKline voluntarily issued a letter warning physicians of the increased bone fracture risk in female patients.

Back pain is quite common for patients on Avandia, although the severity level varies from one patient to another. Avandia back pain sufferers may experience a range of symptoms, from minor lower back discomfort to severe pain and limited mobility.

Headaches are caused by a disturbance of the pain-sensitive structures in the head, including blood vessels, cranial nerves and meninges, membranes that protect the central nervous system. Although most headaches are not serious and can be treated with over-the-counter painkillers, for some patients the pain may worsen over time and lead to other complications.

While the FDA has not yet issued an Avandia recall it is extremely important that you consult your physician if you are currently on Avandia and are experiencing any of the above side effects.
