LASIK eye surgery, also known as laser eye surgery, is performed by ophthalmologists who have a medical degree. LASIK is performed using an excimer laser. The excimer laser is used to change the shape of the cornea and reduce the level of farsightedness, nearsightedness or astigmatism. Before the laser is used, a corneal flap is created. This flap is folded back and then the laser ablates the corneal tissue. After the tissue is removed by the laser, the flap is laid back in place. The corneal flap can be created using a microkeratome, which is an oscillating blade, or a special laser, called a femtosecond laser.
